Embracing the Divine: The Gift of Being a Disciple of Jesus Christ
Following Jesus in a World of Distractions
Life is full of noise, comparison, and distraction. But amidst the chaos, there’s one voice that invites us to peace, purpose, and power—the voice of Jesus Christ. Being a disciple isn't just something we do on Sundays or a label we wear. It's a daily decision. A journey. A sacred invitation to walk with Christ, reflect His light, and share His love. When we embrace discipleship, we’re not signing up for perfection—we’re choosing transformation.
What the Scriptures Teach About Discipleship
Discipleship isn’t a modern invention. It’s embedded in scripture from beginning to end. From Peter leaving his nets to Nephi’s unwavering obedience, we see time and again that discipleship means action and trust. Jesus said, “Come, follow me”—not observe from a distance. He asks us to walk His path, trust His timing, and believe in His promises. When He said, “Take up your cross and follow me” (Luke 14:27), He wasn’t sugarcoating the cost. But He also wasn’t hiding the joy. Being a disciple means letting go of what doesn’t serve us and holding tightly to the One who saves us.
Why His Call Still Matters Today
Jesus didn’t call perfect people. He called people who were willing. Fishermen. Tax collectors. People like you and me. That’s what gives me hope. We don’t have to have it all figured out to follow Him—we just need to start where we are. The call to follow Christ is deeply personal. It reaches into the corners of our hearts and gently, sometimes boldly, asks us to become something more.
How to Tell if You're Becoming a True Disciple
Love is the measuring stick. Jesus said that others would know we are His disciples by our love (John 13:35). So if your heart is being stretched to love deeper, forgive more freely, and serve more joyfully—you're on the path. Obedience matters too—not out of obligation but out of devotion. The more we study His word and align our choices with His will, the more peace we feel. And if humility is growing in your heart, that’s another sign. Christ washed feet. Disciples serve, not to be seen, but because they love.
Faith Fuels the Journey
Faith is what keeps us going when the way gets hard. It's what carries us through unanswered prayers and unseen blessings. Faith connects us to Christ like branches to a vine (John 15:5). The more we abide in Him—through scripture, prayer, and quiet trust—the stronger our faith becomes. But faith also moves us to action. True disciples don’t just believe; they build, they bless, they become. Like the early saints, we press forward even when it's hard—because we know Who we follow.
We’re Not Meant to Do This Alone
One of the sweetest blessings of discipleship is the community we gain. Church, family, friends—even strangers become brothers and sisters when we walk the path of faith together. Community gives us courage. It lifts us when we fall. It sharpens us and supports us (Proverbs 27:17). And it’s where we learn to love like Christ.
Daily Habits of a Disciple
Everyday discipleship doesn’t have to be complicated. Simple habits—like starting your day in prayer, reading even one verse of scripture, or pausing to serve someone—bring power. God isn’t asking for perfect performance. He’s asking for presence. Show up for Him, and He’ll show up for you.
It’s Not Always Easy—But It’s Always Worth It
Discipleship can be hard. There are sacrifices. There are moments of doubt. But the rewards are eternal. Peace. Purpose. Identity. Joy. And above all, a deep, unshakable relationship with Jesus Christ.
Living It Out
Being a disciple means we don’t keep Christ to ourselves. We share Him—through service, through testimony, through the way we treat others. Discipleship is an action verb. Whether we’re ministering to a friend, inviting someone to church, or just offering a smile—we’re living His love.
The Power of Real Stories
Some of the most powerful faith-builders are the testimonies of those who’ve walked this road. I’ve been inspired by so many—from Paul in the New Testament to faithful saints I’ve met online and in Relief Society. Their stories remind me that discipleship isn’t about being flawless—it’s about being faithful.
Let’s Walk This Path Together
You don’t have to figure this out alone. Jesus walks beside you. And so do I. Whether you're just starting your journey or have walked with Him for years, there's always more to discover.
